Lending Library

Babywearing International of North Central Illinois (BWI of NCIL) has a library of baby carriers for our members to borrow. BWI of NCIL annual membership is required in order to borrow carriers outside the meeting times. If you are not a member you may try the carrier at the meeting for free but may not take them home. Membership is $30 per year. A portion of the annual membership fee is kept within our chapter for lending library and other miscellaneous costs and the remainder supports the international organization. Contact us for more info on how the lending library works. This is a great opportunity to see how a certain carrier will work for you and your little one.

Note: Not all carriers will be at every meeting. If there is one you want to try we will do our best to have it available but we cannot guarantee this! Please notify us as soon as possible if you wish to check an item out.

To see our lending library carriers, check out our MyTurn page.

1. Your Responsibility. You assume the responsibility for safely using all carriers and for inspecting the stitching and fabric on all carriers to satisfy yourself that the carrier is sound and suitable for use with your child, and you assume the risk of using a carrier. Each time you borrow a carrier, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless BWI of NCIL, its leaders and members (the “Releasees”), for any harm that may result to you or your child from the use of the carrier, including any harm allegedly resulting from the Releasees’ instruction or alleged failure to instruct.

2. No Tobacco Smoke. Do not expose a carrier to tobacco smoke or tobacco smoke residue. Do not use a carrier where people are smoking, or store a carrier in a place where there is tobacco smoke residue. If a carrier must be transported in a car where smoking occurs, the carrier should be sealed up in a ziplock bag during transport. Carriers that are returned smelling like smoke will incur a 3.00 cleaning fee.

3. Duration of Checkout. Checkout is for one month only. If you cannot return the item at the next month’s meeting, please return it to a leader’s house in person or by mail. You can make arrangements to return an item by mail or in person to the leader nearest you by emailing one of the leaders listed on the blog. To return a carrier by mail, please use Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. To purchase and print a Priority Mail label and get free delivery confirmation service conveniently on the Internet, go to www.usps.com. You will need to know the weight of the package, and you will need to have a credit card for payment. Alternatively, you can go to the post office to mail it. Please e-mail a leader with the delivery confirmation number for tracking purposes.

4. Late Fee. A carrier is considered late if not returned to the next monthly meeting location it was checked out from. If the carrier has not been received within 5 days of the meeting a $1.00 a day late fee will be charged and will be retroactive to the day following the last meeting.

5. One per Month. In general, you may check out one carrier per month. Checking out a second carrier in the same meeting month will be at the discretion of the leaders, after all other attendees have completed their checkouts.

6. Condition on Return. Please return all carriers in such a condition that they are ready for the next person to check out. This means the carrier should be reasonably clean and neatly folded. There will be a $5 replacement charge for carriers returned without the chest clips.

7. Cleaning. Carriers may be spot cleaned with a wet washcloth and hung to air dry (i.e. on a drying rack). Please DO NOT wash or dry your carrier. Many carriers have very specific washing or drying instructions. Washing a carrier incorrectly may ruin it. Carriers can be returned with baby spit up, “chew” marks or pet hair with no penalty. Please let us know if the carrier will need to be washed before we can loan it out again. Carriers that are returned excessively dirty will be charged a 3.00 cleaning fee at the time they are returned.

8. Harm to Carriers. Please treat the carriers with respect. If you ruin a carrier, you are responsible for paying the actual replacement cost of the carrier based on the MSRP, including shipping. The leaders in their sole discretion will determine whether a carrier is ruined.

9. Termination of Privileges. Violation of these policies may result in termination of a member’s borrowing privileges without a refund of dues.

Here is a list of current Lending Library carriers. We will do our best to keep this updated but are always trying to add new carriers. So ask if there is something you are looking for...we may have just gotten one or have one on the way.
